90x90cm grow tents represent the ideal intermediate size for those who want to level up their cultivation without taking up too much space. With 0.81m² of floor space and typically 180cm in height, these tents offer a comfortable growing volume for 4 to 9 plants depending on your cultivation technique. It's the sweet spot between smaller 60x60 tents and larger 120x120 setups.
This dimension hits the mark for several practical reasons. First, it perfectly accommodates 200 to 400W LED lights or a 400W HPS, providing a light density of 250 to 500 PPFD depending on hanging height. Second, ventilation remains manageable with a 150mm extractor fan running at 400-600 m³/h, without making a racket.
In terms of cultivation, that's where it gets interesting. With SOG (Sea of Green), you can easily fit 9 x 11L pots in a 3x3 square. With SCROG (Screen of Green), 4 well-developed plants perfectly fill the space. And for classic LST, 6 plants in 15L pots find their place without overcrowding. The 180cm height leaves 40-50cm for lighting and extraction, meaning 130cm of usable space for plants.
Modern structures use 16mm coated steel tubes, more than sufficient to support 15-20kg of suspended equipment. The 210D Mylar fabric reflects 95% of the light, and frankly, that's where it makes all the difference in terms of yield compared to a room painted white.
First criterion: fabric thickness. A minimum of 210D, ideally 600D for reinforced versions. The thicker it is, the less light leaks and the more resistant it is to snags. Zippers must be robust, preferably metal, because that's what fails first on cheap models.
For the structure, check the tube diameter: 16mm is good, 19mm is better for rigidity. Molded plastic connectors hold up better than assembled parts. Also, count the openings: you need at least one top outlet for extraction, one bottom inlet for fresh air, and sealed passages for cables.
For height, 180cm remains the standard, but some models go up to 200cm. These extra 20cm can make a difference if you're growing varieties that stretch a lot during flowering. However, make sure your ceiling can accommodate it.
Last crucial point: floor trays. Some tents come with them, others don't. A waterproof tray prevents water damage and makes cleaning easier. If there isn't one, plan for a protective tarp under the tent.
For 0.81m², aim for 250 to 400W full spectrum LED or a maximum 400W HPS. For LED, a 300W quantum board type lamp provides about 370 PPFD at 60cm distance, perfect for growth and flowering. With a 400W HPS, stay at least 50-60cm away to avoid heat stress. Samsung LM301B or Osram LEDs are currently the best in terms of light efficiency.
It completely depends on your technique. In SOG with 3 weeks of growth, 9 plants in 11L pots spaced 30cm work perfectly. In SCROG, 4 plants are more than enough with a net 40cm from the ground. For classic LST, 6 plants in 15L pots with 35-40cm spacing yield great results. The important thing is that air circulates well between the plants.
Assemble the structure completely before putting on the fabric, it's less hassle. Unfold the fabric in a clean room, check that there are no sharp objects on the floor. Slide it on from the top, gently pulling on the corners, never forcing it. Zippers should be open during assembly to avoid tension. Once in place, check that all Velcro strips are properly aligned before closing.
For 1.45m³ (90x90x180), a 150mm extractor fan with 400-600 m³/h will do the job, with a dimmer to adjust according to temperature. Add an oscillating fan of 15-20cm to constantly circulate the air. The passive air intake should be 1.5 times the outlet section, meaning 200mm or two 150mm inlets. With an HPS, push ventilation to at least 600 m³/h to dissipate heat.
A space booster is not mandatory for a 90x90 if the structure is at least 16mm, but it helps if you're suspending more than 15kg of equipment. It attaches diagonally between the ceiling tubes, creating triangulation that stiffens the entire structure. Install it after the fabric is on, by reaching inside the tent. This prevents the ceiling from sagging when you hang the extractor, lamp, and possibly a carbon filter.
